Dashing Through the Snow  by Steve Goodier © 2002

"Dashing through the snow." We sing it every December and we do it all through the holiday season. And if there's no snow, we still dash to and fro.

So much to do ... gifts to buy and wrap; cards to write and send; decorations to hang; parties and programs to attend; food to prepare. Do you feel just a little too busy?

One poor woman rushed to buy cards to send to all her friends and family. She snatched up the first ones she saw, stuffed them in envelopes, addressed, stamped and mailed the stack in record time. She noticed she had one left over and she sat down to do what she never took the time to do earlier -- read it. The picture was beautiful. But she felt sick when she read the sentiment:

"This little card is here to say, A special gift is on its way."

With all our rushing about, what happened to the season to be jolly? 'Tis the season to be uptight. The season to be hurried. And for too many, the season to be worried.

Here are some steps to follow if your find yourself dashing through the snow and in need of inner peace:

  1. Believe that inner turmoil and tensions can really harm your life. Anxiety and worry can erode your body, mind and spirit.
  2. When you're in a rush, frenzied or harried, pause. At your busiest, stop everything. Analyze your situation. Separate your anxieties and deal only with those concerns you can actually do anything about.
  3. The wise psychologist William James said, "The essence of genius is to know what to overlook." Be a genius! Overlook the trivial.
  4. Remember that today is not the last day you are ever going to live. There is also a tomorrow, and you don't have to do everything today.
  5. You regularly fill your automobile with fuel. Practice filling your mind with thoughts that give courage, calmness and peace. I know a man who pauses for five minutes twice a day just to fill his mind with serenity.
  6. Finally, let every inner disturbance be a call to exercise your own faith. Seek spiritual peace amidst the busyness of life.

Rather than simply dashing through the snow, practice these steps toward achieving inner peace. And for you, it really can be the season to be jolly!
