A quality consultant connects prayer with job security By Travis Thomas, as seen on www.spirituality.com September 15, 2004 Millions of people every day are struggling to find their place in the work world. Jerry Stevens knows. He’s a quality consultant for one of the top hotel groups in North America. Odds are if you have stayed at a hotel in the US, Jerry may have had a say on the quality of your stay. Although it is Jerry’s job to make sure guests always have an enjoyable visit, the past year for him has been anything but a vacation. A while ago, Jerry received a phone call from the client he’d been working with for the past four and a half years. Jerry, like millions of other people across the country, became a statistic in the company’s downsizing. “I was shocked!” says Jerry. “This was the last call I ever expected to get. I didn’t understand why I was being let go. Besides, my work record was superior and I had just been recognized as the Quality Consultant of the Year a few months previous.” Jerry’s company based their decision on the economy, not on his performance. This is a scary scenario for anyone. To many, job security has become a thing of the past. So, is there anything you can do? Do you just wait for the news to come? And when it does, then what? How do you avoid being afraid? | | He decided to turn to a source of inspiration. |

In the middle of this stressful time, Jerry’s prayerful intuition helped him to turn away from his fears and instead turn to God. He recalls, “I knew that spiritualizing my thought would lead to a balanced and loving approach to this overwhelming problem.” So, once Jerry quit asking questions about why this was happening to him, he decided to turn to a source of inspiration that had been there for him in the past. “I have been reading the spiritual guidebook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, as well as the Bible, for over 20 years,” Jerry says. “They have always brought me comfort, so I knew they could help me with this as well.” So Jerry picked up his Science and Health, and then he picked up the phone. He called a family friend for support. This friend, also a reader of Science and Health, gave Jerry some helpful ideas and offered to pray about his situation. | | God must be present, right now, guiding him. |

Jerry’s friend helped him recognize how much God loves and supports him. Minutes after the conversation with his friend, Jerry already felt better. He made it a goal to strengthen his awareness of his relationship with God. He acknowledged God as his true Father and Mother, and even as his true Employer. He realized God has always been there to care for him and his family in the past, so God must be present, right now, guiding him in the right direction. To keep his thought on God, and away from fear, Jerry contemplated a few specific ideas. He says, “I felt the power of God's grace filling me with love and confidence about my true employment, as God's child. I knew I could trust God for a positive, timely and blessed resolution to this dilemma. I worked on being in ‘God’s employment.’ To me this meant, job or not, I was still provided for in God’s universe. I could still work for God.” Armed with this new inspiration, Jerry used his time off to get closer to God. He realized how important it was to set aside time to deepen his spirituality. Although he was still going through all the normal channels to look for new work, it was the inspirational time during the day that proved most valuable. | | Jerry had three job offers on the table. |

Less than a month after being let go, Jerry had three job offers on the table. He continued to pray and he felt guided to take a new job doing similar work. But, just weeks into his new job Jerry realized that he was away from home way too much, and he had to sacrifice volunteer activities that he cherished. “Once again, I turned to God for strength, patience and direction,” he says. “I'd learned earlier to trust God for help with these questions, so I knew that is what I needed to do.” Soon after, Jerry’s previous company offered to rehire him in his former job, and this time he would even be closer to home. He was, of course, very grateful for this direct answer to his prayers, but he also felt badly about leaving the new company that had just brought him on board. | | In effect, he was now working for both companies! |

Once again, he felt confident God would provide an outcome that would bless everyone involved. This idea kept coming to Jerry, “Don’t second guess God!” Jerry decided to follow this inspiration and chose to return to his former employer. To make the transition smooth for his current employer, he stayed on for three weeks. Jerry was at peace, but he still couldn’t help wondering about the rightness of his decision. Before heading back to work he took a previously scheduled vacation. When he returned he found out the company he had just left was acquired by his old company. In effect, he was now working for both companies! | | Jerry had never been left out of God’s love. |

Though the future wasn’t always certain, Jerry had never been left out of God’s love. Not only did it help him in finding new work, but it shifted his approach to life. He acknowledges, “I have been so blessed by God’s support, maybe I can share my heartfelt gratitude with others." Used by permission www.spirituality.com |
